Check security seals on gaming machines

All electronic gaming machines are fitted with an Intralot Slot Machine Interface Board, known as a SMIB. This connects every operating machine to Intralot’s Central Monitoring and Control System and maintains the integrity of the machine’s operation. All gaming machines must have an unbroken seal. Machines with missing or broken seals should be removed from game play.

Only authorised technicians holding a Gaming Industry Employee (GIE) licence may install, repair or replace SMIBs. Technicians are required to ensure seals are securely attached to the SMIB seal before the gaming machine is returned to game play. We encourage venue operators to check the SMIB security seal has been correctly attached.

Any unauthorised person who attaches, removes or tampers with the SMIB faces penalties including a fine of up to $60,000 (400 penalty units), two years jail, or both.

What should I do if the SMIB seal is broken?

We recommend venue operators regularly check the SMIB security seal is in place and unbroken. If a security seal is missing, the venue operator should:

  • remove the machine from game play
  • contact Intralot and advise of the broken seal
  • arrange for a technician to replace the seal before returning the machine to game play.
