Renewable limited licence

Other related content
Licensees first steps

A renewable limited licence authorises the supply of liquor where the scale and scope of the supply is substantially restricted or limited.

Various ways in which the supply may be limited include the:

  • range of products (including the types of liquor and number of individual liquor products supplied)
  • customers
  • trading hours
  • size of premises
  • means of delivery/supply to customers.

This list is not exhaustive; you may include details of other ways in which supply of liquor is limited.

You must provide a written submission describing the activities you wish to have licensed as part of your application. The submission must include an explanation of how the supply of liquor proposed in the application is limited in nature.

Who would normally apply?
  • internet vendors (please be aware that the supply of liquor only via a website/the internet is not necessarily considered to be a sufficient limitation)
  • off-site caterers
  • motels and accommodation hotels, for their mini-bars
  • caravan parks
  • bed and breakfasts
  • other small businesses where the supply of liquor is ancillary to their business that do not fit within the exemption categories below.

Persons seeking a licence for a single event, or for events on a specified number of dates, should consider applying for a Temporary limited licence.

Clubs seeking a renewable limited licence should consider a Renewable limited licence - club.

Exemptions for minor businesses

Businesses where the supply of liquor is only a small part of the products and services on offer can be exempt from the requirement to hold a liquor licence. This includes some bed and breakfasts, hairdressers, florists, gift-makers and butchers. For more information, see Minor business exemption.

Trading hours

No set trading hours apply. Applicants should specify the hours they desire in the application form, which will be assessed in context of the scale and scope of liquor supply.

Special conditions

Alcohol wholesalers are required to keep records of, and report on, sales to licensed outlets and retailers. For more information, see Wholesale Sales Data - collecting and reporting.

Application fee payable

For information about the application fee for a renewable limited licence, see Application fees and timing.
