Falling on a Friday in 2017, liquor licensees are asked to be prepared for bigger crowds and hype from patrons celebrating the Irish tradition of St Patrick's Day.
With St Patrick's Day fast approaching, licensees are being encouraged to consider additional safety measures to help reduce the risk of alcohol fuelled harm.
Taking place on Friday17 March, celebrations for the famous Irish tradition are expected to draw bigger crowds as patrons may choose to start their weekend early.
To ensure licensees do the right thing, inspectors from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation will be out and about on the lookout for venues not meeting their obligations. Inspectors will particularly focus on checking that licensed venues are:
• abiding by their red line plan
• implementing activities to prevent overcrowding
• exercising the responsible service of alcohol.
Licensees can do a range of things to help reduce the risk of alcohol fuelled harm on the day including:
• replacing glasses with plastic glasses
• providing easy access to free drinking water
• holding ticketed events to control patron numbers
• limiting service including restricting one drink per person, no doubles and no shots.
Penalties and disciplinary action may apply for licensees who fail to meet their obligations.
