These guidelines have been created using best practice design principles based on architectural and town planning expertise to help ensure safety for patrons and staff.

The second edition of Design Guidelines for Licensed Venues (PDF, 1.73 MB) is now available to assist licensees to design and build safer venues.

Licensees and urban designers are encouraged to consider and adopt the guidelines when planning to open or refurbish a licensed premises.

The guidelines provide clear advice on how licensees can use design principles to minimise harm to patrons and staff. They have been created using best practice design principles based on architectural and town planning expertise.

The guidelines cover areas such as:

  • entries, exits and queuing
  • footpaths, laneways, car parks and public space
  • toilets, and
  • outdoor drinking, dining and smoking areas.

Note: these are guidelines only and not legally binding requirements. We encourage their use where possible and to assist in planning for refurbishments and new venue design.
