Responsible Service of Gaming

All gaming venue employees working in gaming machine areas while open to the public must complete an approved Responsible Service of Gaming (RSG) training course within the first six months of starting work in the gaming machine area of an approved venue (you are exempt from this requirement if you have already completed the training within the last three years). This is regardless of whether you are also required to hold a gaming industry employee licence.

Gaming venue employees must also complete a refresher course every three years thereafter.

Changes to RSG training - 1 January 2017

From 1 January 2017, the delivery of RSG training will change.

A standardised course of two modules will need to be completed by relevant staff. Module 1 will be an online course hosted by the State and module 2 will be delivered face-to-face to staff in gaming venues by venue support workers. From 1 January 2017, module 1 must be completed within one month of commencing work in a gaming venue and module 2 must be completed within six months. Staff who have previously completed RSG training will need to complete the new RSG training requirements when their current RSG certificate expires (three years from the date they completed the initial training).

The new RSG training requirements are prescribed by the Gambling Amendment (Training Requirements) Regulations 2016

Until the commencement of the new RSG training, the previous requirements under the Gambling Regulation Act 2003 will continue to apply. This means that until 31 December 2016, staff will continue to be required to complete the current RSG training course and refresher courses. Staff who have previously completed RSG training will have three years from the date they completed the training to complete the new RSG training requirements.

Provisions have been made for those people who would otherwise have been required to complete RSG training on or before 30 June 2017. These staff will have until 1 July 2017 to complete both module one and module two of the RSG training.
