BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register has launched

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has launched BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register.

Australians can self-exclude from all licensed Australian online and phone wagering providers in a simple process. The self-exclusion register is the final measure of the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering which has been implemented by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

The self-exclusion register covers all licenced Australian online or phone wagering providers. A list of the providers that are covered is available on the ACMA website. It does not cover in-venue gambling (casinos, pokie machines or TAB outlets) or illegal services such as online casinos.

Registering is quick and easy and can be done by visiting the BetStop - the National Self-Exclusion Register website. All you need to register is a mobile phone number, email address and either an Australian driver’s licence or a Medicare card.

While you are registered, Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers must not:

  • open a wagering account for you
  • allow you to place bets, or
  • send you marketing material.

If you have self-excluded and one of the listed wagering companies takes a bet from you or sends you direct marketing, you can report this to the ACMA at https://www.betstop.gov.au/contact/.

Wagering providers can check the self-exclusion register to determine whether their customers are self-excluded. Wagering providers can find out more about their obligations at https://www.acma.gov.au/interactive-wagering-providers.

How to register

Registering is quick and easy and can be done at https://www.betstop.gov.au

All you need to register is a mobile phone number, email address and either an Australian driver’s licence or a Medicare card. 

Registration will take about 5 minutes, and you will be added to the register shortly afterwards.

What happens while I am registered?

While you are registered, Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers must not:

• open a wagering account for you

• allow you to place bets, or

• send you marketing material.

How long will my self-exclusion period be?

You can self-exclude for a minimum of 3 months, up to a lifetime.

You can extend your self-exclusion period at any time online through your account.

What services does BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register cover?

BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register covers all licenced Australian online or phone wagering providers. A list of the providers that are covered is on the ACMA’s website.

It does not cover in-venue gambling (casinos, pokie machines or TAB outlets) or illegal services such as online casinos.

Can I choose which betting providers to self-exclude from?

No. Once you register you will be excluded from every licensed online and phone wagering provider in Australia.

Can I register someone else?

No, an individual must add themselves to BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register. 

Can I have support while I am self-excluded?

You can add up to 5 people to support you through your self-exclusion period. Anyone can be your support person, including family and friends or a professional such as a counsellor.

A support person will receive information about your self-exclusion, including notifications for changes to your registration, and have access to support materials to help them perform their role.

How does BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register work?

If you register, your name is added to our register. To identify whether customers are self-excluded, wagering providers can check their customer details against the self-exclusion register.

If the customer details match our records, we advise that wagering provider that the customer is self-excluded.

Will my personal information be safe on BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register?

Yes, personal information will be safe and secure. The Australian Government has required that the Register operator implement strong data security and privacy protections. There are also strict controls on the use and disclosure of personal information held by the register.

How do I come off BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register?

You will be removed from BetStop- the National Self-Exclusion Register at the end of your self-exclusion period.

You can apply to be removed before the end of your self-exclusion period, but only after you have been on the register for at least 3 months. Your application to be removed must be accompanied by a statutory declaration that you have obtained counselling or advice about your decision from a qualified counsellor, psychologist, or doctor.

What if I have a complaint about a wagering company?

If you believe that a wagering provider has breached self-exclusion laws, you can make a complaint to the ACMA at https://www.betstop.gov.au.
