Interact with customers to keep them safe from gambling harm

Everyone who works at a gaming venue should take all reasonable steps to prevent and minimise harm.

This can include, but not limited to, requiring that you and your staff monitor the welfare of gaming machine players, discourage intensive and prolonged gaming machine play, and intervene when a person is displaying behaviour that is consistent with gambling harm.

Where staff witness any signs of distress or intensive game play, it is expected that they interact with the player and encourage a break in play. As an example, if you or your staff see someone playing multiple gaming machines simultaneously or reserving a gaming machine in order to play another gaming machine, they should encourage them to take a break.

The playing of multiple machines simultaneously should always be discouraged.

Staff play an important role in ensuring that gaming activity takes place in a safe and supportive environment. It is vital that signs of distress are identified and handled appropriately.

Ensure that all staff and managers are aware of their obligations and expectations under your venue’s Code of Conduct.

For more information, please refer to the Ministerial Direction for Responsible Gambling Codes of Conduct (PDF, 376.2 KB).
