If your business is a restaurant, club or a party bus operator, you may apply for a permit to allow people to bring their own liquor for consumption on your premises.

Applicants are advised to lodge liquor licence applications at least eight weeks in advance. The time taken to process an application will vary depending on a range of factors including the complexity of the application and any objections which may be raised.

If you know which permit you wish to apply for, please select the appropriate permit below.

Apply for a BYO permit for restaurants or clubs

A BYO permit authorises the consumption, possession and control of liquor in a restaurant or club that does not hold a liquor licence.

Who would normally apply?

Restaurants or clubs that do not intend to sell or provide liquor to customers, but instead wish to allow customers to bring their own liquor for consumption on the premises.

If you are hosting a one off event you may be eligible to apply for a temporary limited licence. See Apply for a temporary limited licence.

No set trading hours apply. Applicants should specify the trading hours they desire when completing the application.

Apply for a BYO permit (party buses)

BYO permit (party buses) authorises the consumption, possession and control of liquor in a party bus that does not hold a liquor licence.

Who would normally apply?

Party bus operators that do not intend to sell or provide liquor to customers but, instead, wish to allow customers to bring their own liquor on board the bus. The BYO permit is for commercially operated buses that take pre-booking and that:

  • operate at night between 8pm and 5am (regardless of the time of passenger pick-up)
  • operate in a designated area or for the purpose of carrying passengers travelling to or from visiting a designated area. For information about designated areas, see Designated areas.

It is an offence for party buses meeting this criteria to operate without a licence.

No set trading hours apply. Applicants should specify the trading hours they desire in the application form.
