Things to consider before applying for a pre-retail licence

Other related content
Liquor wholesaler

There are things you will need to consider, including licence requirements, before applying for a pre-retail licence.

How long does it take?

Please put your application in at least eight weeks before you wish to start trading. The time taken to assess your application will vary depending on a range of factors, including the complexity of the application and any objections which may be raised.

Who would normally apply?

Wholesalers, producers, brewers and liquor importers would normally apply for a pre-retail licence.

Trading hours

Trading hour restrictions do not apply with this type of liquor licence. A pre-retail licence permits the wholesale supply of liquor at any time and on any premises.

Reporting requirements

Liquor wholesalers must collect and report their annual wholesale transactions. For more information, see Wholesale Sales Data - collecting and reporting.

Business name certificate

A business name certificate is required if an individual or partnership is applying for a liquor licence, or if the trading name of the business registered with Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) is different to the company's name or incorporated club's name.

A copy of the business name certificate from ASIC is required. To register your business name, go to the ASIC website for more information.
